Delegates were impressed by the thorough methodology employed by the MTC project partners in delivering a concise and highly relevant policy paper which clearly sets out key issues of high relevance to the maritime industry and to policymakers. In short it offers a holistic perception and represents a common voice for stakeholders of the Interreg IV B North Sea Region Programme on maritime transport. The process targeted additionally to draw concrete recommendations for the Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the countries in the North Sea Region EU Member States and Norway , basing on the activities and findings achieved before. Furthermore this report delivers the necessary input to WP 5 for further discussions with sector organisations which lead to the development of a policy advice. The analyses undertaken covered the landside and seaside perspective. After the presentation a range of questions were taken covering a number of issues including the EU Motorways of the Sea policy, which is a big issue for ferry operators, as well as the policy implications of the new SECA regulations, public funding for seaports, in addition to issues to do with self-handling in ports, and need for improved integration and faster documentation. Topics addressed at the conference included facing future industry challenges, use of alternative fuels, maritime communications, information technology, ship design innovation, and new opportunities in developing countries. By analysing the maritime transport sector from research, programme and project perspectives, it was aimed to create a comprehensive basis that will link Interreg projects with maritime industry trends and developments WP 4 as well as with on-going transport policy developments in the EU WP 5. The results of the process are summarised in the WP4 report, which integrates the findings market derived perspectives and future market needs into the WP 3 results. In this way the paper is intended to act as an inspiration and to contribute to discussions on future EU cohesion and transport policy developments, thereby providing a common North Sea Region voice on these issues. Many of these organisations were also involved as one of the events 50 industry sponsors, also displaying their goods and services at the linked trade show. By doing so EU policy papers on transport and cohesion policy have been taken into account e.
